The objective of this study was to examine the challenges in the implementation of Shinashigna the mother tongue of shinasa community as medium of instruction in primary schools of Metekel Zone and to come up with possible solution to mitigate the challenges. Descriptive survey method was used. The study was conducted in five primary schools of four woredas in Metekel zone where Shinashigna is used as a medium of instruction. All education experts (28) from Woreda and zone, WEO (4) and ZEO heads (8), principals (5) and vice principals (5) and teachers (30) in each sampled schools were included in the study. Quantitative data were collected using five point Likert Type Scale and qualitative data using structured interview. Mean, SD and Independent t-test were used for data analysis and discussion. Interview data were narrated and triangulated with the quantitative analysis and results were arrived. Lack of instructional material resources, lack of participation of teachers in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluating the medium of instruction, lack of budget, lack of attention from planning bodies, absence of proper planning, absence of training need assessment, and priorities for national language and international language over local language were some challenges for implementation of shinashigna as language of instruction in primary schools of Metekel zone. One of the main recommendations is to establish a separate department for the implementation, training, material distribution and monitoring of MTE (Mother Tongue Based Education) at Zonal level.
